Abstract
The
purpose of the research was to describe the cognitive load of seventh grade
students in teaching bilingual mathematics based on cognitive load theory.
According to cognitive load theory, the student’s cognitive loads consist of
intrinsic cognitive load, extraneous cognitive load, and germane cognitive
load. Trough managing the intrinsic load, reducing the extraneous load, and
increasing the germane load, the process of getting information can be more
effective. So, the learning process can be more effective too. The
result of the research showed that intrinsic load was influenced by the number
of element of interactivity of material that learned, the germane load is
influenced by the design of learning and a mental effort of the students in
formed the scheme of knowledge, extraneous cognitive load is influenced by the
way of teacher in presenting the material, language used, psychological
condition of the students, and external distraction.
